Understanding why handicap scoring works is one thing; actually setting it up for a real, recurring group of mixed-ability players is a more practical problem, with a few genuine judgment calls the formula itself can't make for you. Where to start if you've never handicapped before
If your group has never used a handicap before, the easiest entry point is simply picking one recurring mismatched pairing — your most experienced player against whoever's newest — and trying it for a few weeks before rolling it out group-wide. That gives everyone a concrete example to point to before the whole group's scoring changes at once.
The formula, quickly
Take the gap between two players' (or teams') scoring averages, multiply by a factor (commonly 0.75), and add the result to the weaker side's score for that match — optionally capped at a maximum so an extreme skill gap doesn't produce an oversized handicap. That's the entire mechanic behind this site's Lawn Game Handicap Calculator, and everything below is about applying it well in practice, across a few different games and a few genuinely awkward situations the plain formula doesn't fully answer on its own.
Worked example: bocce
Say two bocce players have recent scoring averages of 9 and 5 points per game — a real but moderate gap. At the standard 0.75 factor, that's a 3-point handicap (a 4-point gap × 0.75 = 3) added to the weaker player's score each match. It's a meaningfully smaller adjustment than the cornhole examples elsewhere on this site, simply because bocce's typical scoring range per game is smaller than cornhole's race-to-21 — which is exactly why handicapping always has to work off each game's own numbers rather than a one-size-fits-all point value.
Worked example: horseshoes
Horseshoes averages might be tracked as ringers per game rather than total points, and the same formula applies just as well. Two players averaging 6 and 2 ringers per game have a 4-ringer gap; at the default factor, that's a 3-ringer-equivalent handicap for the weaker player. Whether you convert that into bonus ringers, bonus points, or however your group prefers to track it is a house-rule detail — the underlying math for finding a fair adjustment is identical regardless of which unit you're handicapping in.
Worked example: a genuinely lopsided matchup, with and without a cap
Handicapping shows its real value on the more extreme matchups. Take a 24-average veteran against a 6-average newcomer — an 18-point gap. Uncapped, at the standard 0.75 factor, that's a 13.5-point handicap, more than double the newcomer's own average. Applied to an actual match — say a raw result of 20 to 14 in the veteran's favor — the uncapped handicap flips the result entirely: the newcomer's adjusted score becomes 27.5 against the veteran's 20, a win built almost entirely out of the handicap rather than the newcomer's own throwing. Capping the handicap at 10 points instead holds the adjustment to a more reasonable 20 to 24 — the newcomer still wins on the adjusted total, but by a margin that at least partly reflects a game they actually played well, not just a formula doing all the work. Whether 10, or some other number, is the right cap for your group is a judgment call worth making deliberately rather than defaulting to no cap at all.
Bootstrapping a brand-new player's first average
The formula needs a real average to work from, and that's exactly the thing a brand-new player doesn't have yet. This is a genuine gap the math itself can't fill — there's no calculation that produces a meaningful "average" from zero games played, and treating a guess as if it were a real average risks either an unfairly large or unfairly small handicap right out of the gate. A few practical approaches groups actually use: run a few unscored practice rounds first and use that as a rough starting average once the newcomer has settled in past the initial nervous unfamiliarity; start them at the group's lowest existing average (a conservative, low-handicap assumption that corrects upward quickly as real games accumulate); or simply agree the first two or three games are "unofficial" for handicap purposes and start tracking for real once a genuine average exists. None of these is mathematically "correct" the way the handicap formula itself is — they're reasonable starting points, and the sooner a new player has 4 or 5 real games logged, the sooner the guesswork becomes unnecessary.
How many games before an average is "real"
There's no universal answer here either, but a useful rule of thumb: an average built from only 1 or 2 games is still mostly measuring luck, while one built from 8 to 10 games is measuring something closer to genuine skill. Many casual groups settle somewhere in the middle — treating 4 to 6 games as "enough" to start handicapping seriously, while staying open to the number being noisy for a little while longer. What matters more than the exact cutoff is agreeing on one as a group, so nobody feels like their handicap was decided arbitrarily after one unusually good or bad night.
Recalculating as the season goes
A handicap based on a stale average defeats its own purpose. If a newer player's average climbs from 10 to 15 over a season of real improvement while a veteran holds steady at 18, the fair handicap shrinks from 6 points down to about 2.3 — and a group that keeps using the original 6-point number out of habit is quietly overcorrecting every week from that point on. Building in a simple habit — recalculating everyone's rolling average at the start of each month, or every set number of games — keeps the whole system honest without turning into a full-time bookkeeping job.
Close averages and exact ties
Not every pairing in a mixed-ability group actually needs a handicap. Two players with averages of 15 and 13 — a real but small gap — get a correspondingly small 1.5-point adjustment at the default factor, which is exactly right: a small skill difference should only need a small correction, not a large symbolic one. When two players' averages land exactly equal, the calculator returns no handicap and no "stronger" side at all; the match is a true even matchup and plays out entirely on the day's raw scores, the way most one-off games do anyway.
Handicapping inside a tournament bracket
If your group runs both a seeded bracket and a handicap system, it's worth deciding up front how the two interact rather than discovering the conflict mid-tournament. The cleanest approach most groups land on: use seeding (based on the same averages you'd otherwise handicap with) to build a fair bracket that keeps the strongest players apart early, per our guide to running a fair bracket, and then apply handicaps within individual matches as they come up, particularly in early rounds where a bracket's byes and seeding gaps mean a strong player is more likely to face a much weaker one. By the semifinals and final, seeding has typically already sorted players into fairly close matchups, and handicapping starts to matter less by that point anyway.
Being transparent about the numbers
Handicap systems only stay trusted if everyone can see how their own number was calculated, and it's worth making that visible rather than treating it as something only the person running the game night understands. Posting each player's current average and the resulting handicaps somewhere visible — a shared note, a whiteboard by the cornhole boards, whatever fits your group — heads off the natural suspicion that can creep in when someone's adjusted score wins them a close match. It also gives newer players a concrete number to watch improve over a season, which is its own small motivation to keep coming back and playing more games.
Doubles and team averages
For fixed doubles partnerships, average the team's combined recent scores the same way you would an individual's, and handicap the two teams against each other directly. For groups with rotating partners, it's usually more reliable to handicap based on each individual's own average and add both partners' handicaps together, rather than trying to maintain a separate running average for every possible pairing — a rotating-partner group can easily have more possible pairings than games played in a season, which makes a per-pairing average close to meaningless.
