Why cancellation scoring feels different
Unlike a simple points-added format, cancellation scoring means only the gap between the two teams matters each round. A team that throws two bags in the hole while the other throws one still only nets 3 points that round (6 minus 3) — not 6. That keeps blowout rounds rarer and rewards consistently out-throwing your opponent rather than one lucky bag.

What is cancellation scoring in cornhole?
Each round, both teams throw 4 bags and add up bags in the hole (3 points each) and bags left on the board (1 point each). Whichever team scored more that round subtracts the other team's score from theirs, and only that difference is added to their running total — the lower-scoring team adds nothing that round. If both teams score the same, the round cancels out completely and nobody's total moves.
How many points do you need to win?
Standard cornhole is a race to 21 points, and you win as soon as your total reaches or passes 21 at the end of a completed round — there's no requirement to win by exactly 2 like some other games, though some house rules add that variation.
Can both teams score in the same round?
No. Because cancellation scoring only awards the difference to the higher-scoring team, at most one team's total increases per round. This is what keeps cornhole games close and makes a single strong round enough to take a real lead.
What counts as a bag "on the board"?
A bag that lands and stays anywhere on the board's playing surface without falling through the hole or off the edges scores 1 point. A bag that goes in the hole scores 3 and no longer counts toward the board total for that bag.
