Horseshoe Pitching Distance and Scoring: Ringers, Leaners, and How Points Are Actually Counted
Horseshoes has one of the simpler scoring systems among backyard lawn games, but the details — what actually counts as a ringer, what happens when both sides throw one, and how far that pitch is actually traveling — are worth getting precisely right, since they're exactly the kind of thing an experienced player will correct you on mid-game. There's also a genuine wrinkle most casual explanations skip entirely: horseshoes is played under two different, both-legitimate scoring systems, and the one your group happens to use can change who actually won an inning.
The distance
Regulation horseshoe pitching sets the two stakes 40 feet apart for adult men's competitive play, with a shorter 30-foot distance commonly used for women's, junior, and senior divisions. Players pitch from behind a foul line set 3 feet in front of the stake they're aiming at, which means the effective pitching distance — foul line to stake — runs a bit shorter than the full 40 feet stake-to-stake. None of this is fixed in stone for casual play; many backyard groups simply pick whichever distance keeps the game fun for whoever's actually playing that day.
How points are actually counted
A ringer — a shoe thrown so it completely encircles the stake — scores 3 points. A shoe that isn't a ringer but comes to rest within 6 inches of the stake scores 1 point; this includes a leaner, a shoe that comes to rest standing upright against the stake itself. A shoe that lands farther than 6 inches from the stake, or off to the side entirely, scores nothing. Each player throws 2 shoes per turn (called an "inning"), so a single inning's raw scoring potential per player tops out at 6 points if both shoes ring.
Two different scoring methods, and why that matters
Horseshoes is actually played under two distinct, both-legitimate scoring methods, and which one a given group uses changes the numbers meaningfully — this is worth knowing before you find yourself in a mid-game argument about whether someone's shoe should have scored.
Count-all scoring is the simpler of the two: every shoe scores on its own merit, independent of what the other player threw. A ringer is always worth 3, an in-count shoe (within 6 inches, including a leaner) is always worth 1, and both players can — and regularly do — score points in the same inning. There's no cancellation at all in count-all play, not even between two ringers.
Cancellation scoring works differently, and closer in spirit to how this site's own cornhole calculator behaves: only one player can score in a given inning. Each player's closest shoe is compared against the other's closest shoe, and if they're equally good (most importantly, if both are ringers) they cancel out — a "dead ringer" scores nothing for either side, even though both players just pitched perfectly. If one player's best shoe beats the other's, that player scores for whatever isn't cancelled out; the losing side gets nothing for the inning, the same way a cornhole team that's out-thrown in a round banks nothing regardless of how well they actually played.
The same inning, scored two different ways
A single example makes the difference concrete. Say Player A throws a ringer and a miss, while Player B throws two shoes that land outside the 6-inch scoring range entirely. Under count-all: A scores 3 (the ringer), B scores 0 (nothing in count) — same result under cancellation, since there's nothing of B's to cancel A's ringer against.
Now change just one thing: both players throw a ringer this inning. Under count-all, both ringers score independently — A gets 3, B gets 3, and the inning is a wash on the scoreboard even though both pitched a ringer. Under cancellation, that same inning is a "dead ringer" — both ringers cancel completely, and neither player's total moves at all, even though the raw throwing was identical to the count-all version. The two methods can genuinely disagree about who "won" an inning even when the shoes landed in exactly the same places, which is exactly why it's worth confirming which method your group or league is using before keeping score.
A worked count-all game across three innings
Because it's the simpler of the two to follow, here's a full count-all example across three innings:
- Inning 1: A throws a ringer and a miss (3 points). B throws a shoe 4 inches out and a shoe 10 inches out — only the 4-inch shoe is in count (1 point). Both score: A 3, B 1.
- Inning 2: A throws two ringers (6 points). B throws one ringer and a miss (3 points). Both score independently, no cancellation: A 6, B 3.
- Inning 3: A throws a leaner and a miss (1 point). B throws two shoes, at 5 inches and 3 inches, both in count (2 points). Both score: A 1, B 2.
Running totals after 3 innings: Player A 10 (3+6+1), Player B 6 (1+3+2). Notice every single inning had both players putting points on the board — that's the defining feature of count-all scoring, and it's a big part of why it's the more common choice for casual and backyard play, where a simpler "just add up what actually landed" system is easier to referee informally than tracking cancellations.
Settling a close ringer call
Not every close throw is obvious from a standing look, and horseshoes has a real, physical way to settle the dispute: lay a straightedge across the two points at the open end of the shoe (called the heel calks) and check whether it touches the stake anywhere along its length. If the straightedge clears the stake without touching it, the shoe legitimately encircles the stake and counts as a ringer, however marginal it looked by eye. If the straightedge does touch the stake, it's not a ringer, no matter how close or "basically touching" the shoe appeared. Keeping a straightedge (or even just a reliably straight stick) near the pit removes most of the "that was totally a ringer" arguments that otherwise crop up in a close game.
What game length looks like
Sanctioned horseshoe matches commonly play to 40 points, though plenty of casual and backyard games instead just play a fixed number of innings, or race to 21 the same way cornhole does. There's no single universal target the way there is for, say, cornhole's near-universal race to 21 — agree with your group on whichever format (count-all or cancellation, and whatever the winning score or inning count is) you're using before the first shoe is pitched, since as shown above, the choice of scoring method alone can change who's actually ahead.
What the physics of a 40-foot pitch actually looks like
Running the regulation 40-foot stake distance through this site's idealized (no air resistance) projectile-motion model shows roughly what a level-ground, 45-degree toss needs to cover that distance: right around 24½ mph. Accounting for the foul line sitting 3 feet in front of the stake — so the shoe is realistically covering closer to 37 feet in the air — that drops slightly to about 23½ mph. Flattening the release angle to something closer to how horseshoes is actually pitched in practice (around 30 degrees rather than a high 45-degree lob) needs a bit more speed for the same distance, roughly 26¼ mph, since a flatter trajectory covers less ground per unit of speed than the 45-degree angle that maximizes range.
It's worth being honest about what this model does and doesn't capture. Real competitive horseshoe pitching isn't actually played as a "maximum distance at minimum speed" exercise — the distance is fixed by the stake position, and skilled pitchers instead focus on a controlled, repeatable spin (commonly a "1-turn" or "1¾-turn" release, where the shoe rotates a specific amount in flight so it opens up right as it reaches the stake) to land consistently in nearly the same spot every time. A safety note
A pitched horseshoe is a heavy piece of metal moving at real speed, and it doesn't always land where it was aimed. Keep spectators well behind the pitching line and clear of the pit itself, not just to the side of it — this matters just as much once you understand the scoring as it did when you were first setting the pit up.
